Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

Selat Melaka Journal acknowledges the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in academic research and scholarly publishing. While AI tools may assist with certain technical aspects of manuscript preparation, the journal is firmly committed to upholding academic integrity, originality, transparency, and ethical publication practices. This policy establishes clear guidelines on the acceptable and prohibited use of AI throughout the publication process.

1. Definition of Artificial Intelligence Tools

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools refer to software or systems that utilize machine learning, natural language processing, or automated algorithms to assist with tasks such as language editing, translation, data visualization, reference formatting, plagiarism detection, and editorial screening.

2. Prohibition of AI-Generated Content

The use of AI to generate any part of the manuscript is strictly prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Manuscript text (introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion)

  2. Research data, results, analysis, or interpretations

  3. Tables, figures, images, illustrations, or graphical content

  4. References and citations

Manuscripts found to contain AI-generated scholarly content may be rejected or retracted.

3. Permitted Use of AI Assistance

Authors may use AI tools only for limited technical assistance, such as:

  1. Grammar and spelling checks

  2. Language editing (copy editing)

  3. Reference formatting assistance

Such use must not influence the intellectual substance, originality, or scholarly contribution of the manuscript.

4. Disclosure of AI Assistance

Any use of AI tools, regardless of extent, must be transparently disclosed by the authors. Disclosure must be stated in the Acknowledgments section of the manuscript and should include:

  1. The name of the AI tool(s) used

  2. The specific purpose of AI usage (e.g., grammar checking or copy editing)

Failure to disclose AI assistance will be considered a violation of publication ethics.

5. AI Screening and Detection

All submitted manuscripts will undergo AI screening as part of the editorial evaluation process.
Selat Melaka Journal uses Turnitin software to screen manuscripts for AI-generated content.

  1. If the AI detection rate exceeds 10%, the manuscript will be returned to the authors for revision or may be rejected

  2. The final decision will depend on the manuscript’s novelty, scholarly contribution, originality, and overall quality

  3. Repeated or serious violations may result in immediate rejection

6. Authorship and Accountability

AI tools may not be listed as authors or co-authors. All listed authors bear full responsibility for:

  1. The originality and accuracy of the manuscript

  2. Compliance with ethical and publication standards

  3. Any consequences arising from the use or misuse of AI tools

7. Use of AI by Reviewers

Reviewers may use AI tools for limited purposes, such as language assessment or ethical screening, provided that:

  1. Manuscript confidentiality is strictly maintained

  2. Unpublished manuscripts are not uploaded to publicly accessible AI platforms

  3. AI tools do not replace independent scholarly judgment

8. Use of AI by Editors

Editors may use AI tools for administrative and screening purposes, including plagiarism and AI detection. However:

  1. Editorial decisions remain the sole responsibility of human editors

  2. AI tools must not replace peer review or editorial evaluation

9. Ethical Compliance and Sanctions

Any misuse of AI tools—including undisclosed assistance, AI-generated content, or manipulation of originality will be treated as publication misconduct and handled in accordance with the journal’s Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement and the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

10. Policy Review and Updates

This AI Policy will be reviewed and updated periodically to ensure alignment with advancements in AI technologies, ethical standards, and international scholarly publishing practices.
